KAIST offices were recently reorganized. The existing Vice Presidency was divided into three new offices: Operations Vice President and Provost, External Affairs Vice President and Dean of Planning, and Seoul Vice President and Dean of Techno MBA.
The first two Vice Presidencies were filled. Sang-soo Kim, professor of Mechanical Engineering, was appointed as Vice President of Operations, and Soon-heung Chang, professor of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, was appointed as vice President of External Relations.
Times: | What do you think of the reorganization? |
Operations VP: | I think this is one step for advancing to a future-oriented university. By dividing the role we can perform more effectively and heighten competitiveness. |
Times: | Would you explain the job description? |
Operations VP: | Almost the same as the past. I will manage matters such as school affairs, research, administration and so forth. I also think I should play a role in enhancing mutual credibility and understanding for the advancement of KAIST. |
External VP: | I will manage planning, public relations and international relations. The main duties of students and faculty are education and research. My job is to create an infrastructure for these activities. At the same time, I will be responsible for securing financing and for managing KAIST public relations. |
Times: | How will you manage your roles? |
Operations VP: | Since the inauguration of President Laughlin, it is true that there were some trouble caused by shortage of mutual understanding and so forth. These communications gaps could weaken our competitive position with respect to other universities. As the Vice President of Operations, I will do my best for better smoother communication between president, faculties and students. |
External VP: | I am responsible for obtaining money for fine education and research. Few schools get supported as much as we get now. To sustain this condition, we need clear vision, a sensible business plan and a good external image. I will lay a cornerstone for those. |
