When Did You Last Clean?

The DORMITORY ROOM is the place where you spend time the most. Do you remember when you last cleaned this room? Open hose day during the KAIST festival period? The last parents visiting day? As you begin to live in a dorm, if you catch a cold or have respiratory ailments very often, your laziness at not cleaning could be a cause.

Let's knock on Mr. A's door. I open the door, and there is a weird smell. But Mr. A living in that room doesn't sense it. Ventilation is absolutely necessary. Except when yellow sand is heavy, you have to vent at least twice a day. This is especially true during winter, when heaters cause the air to be very dry. Ventilation is required to maintain the indoor humidity. Winter is not only cold, but its dryness can make you catch a cold. There are too many clothes lying around, so I sit on the floor. Dust comes from under the bed. How long is it since Mr. A last cleaned? Mopping with damp cloth is necessary from time to time. Minute particles in the piles of dust can hurt your health. Once they go into your lungs, they cause serious respiratory ailments because they never come back out. Also if you don't instantly wipe accumulated dust from your skin, it can cause skin disease. When you mop with damp cloth, you have to clean corners more carefully because invisible areas have more dust. A computer monitor is also a dust magnet. You have to clean it with liquid cleaner. Now you empty the trash, and organize big things. Hey, Mr. A. I don't expect cleaning every day, just please clean at least once a week.

How clean was the SHOWER ROOM when you last used it? In the case of shower room with tile, the biggest troublemaker is entering a shower room wearing shoes. People who finished showering have to stand with bare feet on those dirty tiles. Exchanging the curtain only twice a year is unbelievable. This trouble can be solved easily. It is only necessary for people to leave the door open after they shower. Lastly, please take your clothes with you after shower.

The RESTROOM is the place you can detect dirt very easily. When you see commodes clogged with papers and unflushed, you feel disgusted. And some people even throw away food trash in the washstand. What a feeling it is to begin washing your face and see floating instant noodles on the water! As food trash goes bad easily and is very smelly, throwing it away to the trash can is extremely important. And the reason for too much dirt on the washer or on the floor around washer is simply using too much detergent. Let's use the appropriate amount of detergent for clean laundry and a green environment.

How high is our CLEANLINESS LEVEL cleanness level? The chart on left shows the cleaning maid's daily routine. Since she does separate garbage collection from 8:00 am to 10:30 am, whenever we go to school in the morning, she is there. However, nobody notices what her routine is, even though her picture is on the restroom door. She thanks you always, but you didn't pay attention to her. So I talked with her:

Times: What is the toughest thing when you clean?
Maid:

Actually, cleaning is a tough job no matter where you clean. But I have never felt it's too tough to do. The separate garbage collection is very ineffective. I wish students would improve their garbage separation.

Times:

But even though we students do separate garbage, we can't just take it out as is. We have to pull it out and separate it again! It is extremely laborious and time-consuming.

Maid:

KAIST students are fairly mature. They use the restroom and shower room respectfully, so I don't have that much trouble with cleaning. I always appreciate it.

Times:

Do you notice any difference of cleaning between cleaning KAIST and other places?

Maid:

Before here, I worked 2 places - at a Daeduck University dorm and at Hanwool apartments. At Daeduck University I didn't see any difference with KAIST. It is almost same. But KAIST students are better at saying 'hello' and being kind, so working here is more pleasant.

Times:

Have you ever seen student's room?

Maid:

No. They leave the door locked. We clean the hallway, restroom, commons, stair and shower room. (When she heard that students clean their rooms inadequately ...) I am not sure how serious their rooms are, but other places are OK. I think students need to understand the importance of cleaning.

Times:

Do you have any advice to students?

Maid:

Just keep cleaning. You guys are gentle, and tend to use places sensibly. If we can find a more effective way to separate garbage collection, I would be even happier.
