World Reacts to News of First Cloned Dog
Korea's Snuppy Named Amazing Invention of the Year
Dogs cloned by Koreas leading expert in the field Dr. Hwang woo-suk and his team will replace monkeys in key embryonic stem cell research, a member of the team that bred the worlds first cloned dog said Thursday. Prof. Ahn Cu-rie of Seoul National University said the team had planned to use monkeys to test stem cell treatment for spinal cord diseases but would use cloned dogs instead.

The team plans to transplant animal embryonic stem cells into cloned animals in preparatory experiments for the use of stem cells in treating human beings.

Ahn said monkeys, which have more genes in common with humans, make better subjects for tests, but the cloned dogs would have to do for the transplant experiment since Hwang made it clear cloning monkeys was impossible.
